Leave the covering on for at least 4 hours. Take the covering off and wash thoroughly, making sure to get the tattoo clean and smooth. If another washing is necessary then wash again.
Let the tattoo air dry or blot dry with a clean paper towel. Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor or A+D ointment, it should not be shiny on the tattoo after application. If moisturizer is shiny after application, blot excess off with a paper towel. Wash and moisturize 2 times a day.
After 5 days, use a quality unscented lotion, such as Lubriderm or Curel, the same as you had used the Aquaphor or A&D ointment. The goal is to keep the new tattoo hydrated, but not overly so.
Do not expose the tattoo to the sun, chlorinated, fresh, or salt water for at least two weeks. Even after complete healing, exposure to the sun without the use of sunblock will lessen the colors and life of the tattoo. The tattoo will form a scab while healing, do not pick at them. This can pull the ink out of an unhealed tattoo. Do not soak the tattoo in the shower or bath, this can cause the scabs to fall off as well.
